My name is Mikaila Kerr, and I was born and raised in Abbotsford British Columbia. I moved to Kamloops in 2021 when I was enrolled in TRU’s Education Program. I wanted to be a teacher ever since grade 5. Growing up and evolving naturally over time, my career path changed. I originally wanted to be a firefighter because I knew that I wanted to do something in life where I can make a difference in people’s lives, and to have a profession where I am able to help the community. I knew that I was gifted with natural strength and a strong mental presence, and therefore, I thought firefighting would be the perfect career for me. However, as time went on I quicky discovered that my heart is too soft for a profession like firefighting. I reflected on my life shortly after graduation and resorted back to what I originally wanted to do which was to be a teacher. I knew that I wanted to have a career where I was able to make a difference and teaching is also a career where I am capable and am certainly able to do that. This is when I had an ah-ha moment that made sense in my head, and I knew that teaching is the perfect profession for me. I instantly quit my current job at Costco and decided to enroll myself back in school. I finished my undergrad at the University of the Fraser Valley and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Geography and maintained an overall GPA of 3.45. Upon completion of my 120 credits, I decided to apply to TRU’s Bachelor of Education program, and I am currently finishing up my first year here at Thompson Rivers University.
My hobbies are hiking, working out, playing sports, and hanging out with my friends. Anything outdoors I love to do. Growing up my family and I did a lot of camping, and therefore, I would say that I am quite an outdoorsy person. My family and I did both dry camping, but also a lot of glamping too at Bridal Falls in Chilliwack, BC. My camping experiences are something that have shaped me and my mindset in positive and open minded way. They are also memories that I will forever remember/cherish.
