The first people’s principles of learning are a teaching tool that BC teachers implement when creating our lesson plans.  The first people’s principles of learning were articulated by Indigenous elders, scholars and knowledge keepers which was used to guide the development of the curriculum and teaching of the English first people’s course. This poster was created by the BC ministry of education and the First Nations Education Steering Committee in 2007. These statements on the poster represent an attempt to identify common elements in the Indigenous teaching and learning approaches that prevail within the First Peoples societies. When creating my unit and lesson plans, I always try to be mindful and resort back to the FPPoL to incorporate Indigenous aspects into all my teaching strategies. I also try to do a land acknowledgement every time I teach because it is important to recognize that we are learning, teaching, playing, and living, in unceded territories.
