Throughout my undergrad, a couple of my geography classes required me to do a city studio project as my big final assignment for the class. City studio projects, also known as HUBUB in which we were asked to work alongside the city of Abbotsford to try and come up as a class/small group to solutions or creations that will make Abbotsford a better and more sustainable place to live. The term HUBUB means that it is an interactive project showcase that takes place at Abbotsford’s City Hall in which UFV students share their projects, findings, and recommendations with the city and the cities staff to promote these creations. The staff then gets to vote on the projects that they like best, and the winner gets to have dinner with the Mayor of Abbotsford. My group won an award as we created a poster to promote the banning of plastic bags. My group and I designed our poster to try and encourage people to be more environmentally bags when shopping, instead of using plastic bags. Keeping in mind that this project was created shortly before people needed to pay 5 cents to get a plastic bag from the grocery store. We brought up the importance of sustainability, the increase of pollution, the amount of waste they create and end up in our oceans and landfills, and how plastic bags are not biodegradable.
